Grief is a strange thing
It comes to you in waves
And every time you feel that you’ll drown
You’ll surface again!
Grief is a strange thing
It leaves behind a tingling feeling
Your emotions might run dry
But never that weird sensation
Grief is a strange thing
You feel that you’re done and over it
Yet, when you think you’ve shut the door
And are ready to leave, it beckons again
Grief is a strange thing
It can pull you to its core
But when you want to wallow in it
It thrusts you out of the door
You cannot simply shoo it away
It’ll come unexpectedly to embrace you
So let it run its course like a river
Let it feel daunting, let it bicker
It might never leave but it will quieten down
Not another whimper, not another sound
The closure will free you and you’ll move on
While it’s hushed footsteps, walk beside you,
From dusk to dawn!

Well said! I lost my daughter last year, and indeed, the loss comes in waves. But her love is walking, in the stillness, of my soul. Blessings!

Thank you for this beautiful and heartfelt poem, Harshi. You are so right about grief coming in waves. This Christmas (on the 30th of December) will be six years since I lost my dear Mum. I miss her as much today as I did just after she left us. The grief isn’t as all-consuming as it was at first, but it catches me out sometimes when I least expect it. Love to you, my friend Xx 💓💐💕

Dear Harshi, I’ve just found your reply to my comment in my spam box for some reason. I don’t check it all that often, but probably should. Anyway, I just wanted to say thank you for your hugs, love and healing vibes. I hope you are well and getting ready for Christmas (if you celebrate it). Xx 🤗🌼💓

Coming in waves is the perfect way to describe grief. It washes over you when you least expect it to, and the waves come less frequently with time but they never go away. A perfect poetic description of loss, Harshi. Thanks!
